The Alberta oil sands are examined in the context of Jacques Ellul’s analysis of the technological society. Ellul’s theory of technology as a social rather than technical phenomenon illuminates the rhetoric of economic necessity and inevitability used to justify the particular case of the Alberta oil sands industry. Ohter social values – including moral goods, future generations and environmental sustainability – are subsumed within efficient mastery of nature. This techno-logic recognizes no logic but its own and thus assumes for itself a sacred character. Applying Ellul’s hermeneutic provides grounding for the examination of tensions surround the Alberta oil sands.

Victor Lieffers, Professor and Chair Department of Renewable Resources – Silviculture and Forest Ecology, Renewable Resources
Increasingly energy exploration in Alberta is done in forested landscapes. These are sites are usually dominated by woody vegetation and large trees. The ecosystems that have assembled in forests are adapted to shaded environments. Reclamation workers needs to focus on regenerating and rebuilding forest communities. Renewal of forests should link to the extensive knowledge gained from management of forest renewal and forest dynamics associated with silvicultural processes build up over a century or more of management of forests. In this seminar I will discuss the various aspects of silvicultural knowledge that might be applied to land reclamation in forested environments. These include:

1. Taking control of the site with wood vegetation – best done by full-stocking of shade intolerant colonizers such as aspen. Deep shade controls weed and agronomic invaders which thrive in full light.

2. Using site classification to describe various ecosystems and their various treatments.

3. Assessing potential for natural regeneration – examining natural distribution of seed trees or serotinous cones of pine.

4. Creation of microsites, including coarse woody material.

5. Protection of forest floor during disturbance – forest floor acts as a source of propagules.

6. Using mechanical site preparation to develop specific microsite for planting of seedlings suited to particular ecosites.

TIME:	4:00 pm MST
WHERE:	First Presbyterian Church, 10025 105 St., Edmonton, AB T5J 1C8

“Music at First” presents Four Saturdays at Four, part of the 100th Anniversary Celebrations for the First Presbyterian Church Building.

Come to a concert, lift your spirits, and help keep out the cold!

This is a fundraiser to keep out the cold by raising enough money to repair “the rear window”, an historic stained glass window at the rear of the sanctuary gallery.

Thrill to Scottish music performed by Edmonton’s premier piper on two sets of bagpipes with a full set of organ pipes played by Joachim Segger. Be delighted by the sounds of the handbells, and the premiere performance of a Christmas set for organ, bagpipes, and bells arranged by Joachim Segger. Also hear an award-winning work for handbells and voice composed and arranged by Albertans Richard Reimer and Darryl Dewalt, with Harry Currie (minister, First Presbyterian Church), soloist.
